Welcome to Day 3 of our new reality! Things are starting to get real! On a positive note, there were tons of families walking the beach today, including some Aborn peeps. That gave me a great idea! One of the BIG skills in elementary school is learning how to identify Main Idea and Details. This is a higher-level skill that begins with Categorizing. Here are some great Categorizing activities:
Collect a bunch of things at the beach (or woods, or backyard). You can also make a list of things if you are not into collecting! Or bring a journal and have your child draw objects.
Ask your child to sort them (younger kids will need the categories and older kids can sort then label the categories). For example: Living (seagull, clam, seaweed, hermit crab) and Non-Living (rock, pebble, sand, water). You can challenge them to re-sort (e.g. animals and plants and non-living) and try to guess the Categories.
Organize your thinking in a Top Down Web or using Two Column Notes. See examples below. Help younger students with the vocabulary but let them spell on their own. Unleash the power of inventive spelling!
Everything and anything can be sorted and categorized. Need your kitchen drawers reorganized? That’s a great place to start!
Let me know how it goes!
All the best,
Mrs. Spiess
Stay safe at work, Karla!!
Good afternoon Aborn community. This is Gabriella Duprey's mom. New to the blog here. I'll try to participate as much as possible. But I am a nurse working in a hospital. And as you can imagine things are very busy.
Thank you for setting this up and the online learning resources. Gabriella misses her school routine and her friends but she knows this is only temporary.
Stay safe
